How I Coffee Stain And Color Fabric

I have had a lot of questions about my coffee stain mixture and about coloring fabric so I decided to create this blog to give you my coffee stain recipe and explain how I color my fabric. If you love the look of old things you are going to love coffee staining your fabric, not only does it give the fabric an old worn look it also smells wonderful.People have asked why I color my fabric instead of using the bought colored fabric, I color my fabric because I can mix my coffee stain right in with the paint which gives it a worn look, I can control the color by adding more paint or more coffee stain mixture also It makes your fabric stiffer which is great when you are making flowers other wise I would have to use stiffy and I want the smell of the coffee mixture.

Coffee Stain Recipe

  • 2 Cups Water
  • ½ Cup Instant Coffee
  • 2 Tablespoons Vanilla
  • 2 Teaspoons Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 Teaspoon Ground Nutmeg

Pour water into a small pot and bring to a simmer, remove from heat and add the above remaining ingredients and stir until they are all blended, let cool down before using.

How to Coffee Stain Fabric

To coffee stain your fabric first start by making the above coffee stain recipe then make sure you wear a pair of rubber gloves before you begin the next part or your hands will also get coffee stained.  After the coffee stain mixture has cooled some pour the mixture into a basin then add your fabric moving and rearranging the fabric until all the fabric has absorbed the coffee stain mixture, next ring out the fabric and dry in the sun if it is not sunny out you can dry your fabric on a waxed or foiled lined cookie sheet in a 200 degree oven you need to make sure you check and rearrange your fabric about every 5 minutes or so fabric so the fabric will dry and not burn.  If you have left over coffee stain mixture you can put it in container and store in the refrigerator for another time, you may want to reheat a bit so the spices that settled on the bottom will mix with the coffee again.

How to Color Fabric

I prefer to us Muslin when I want to color fabric but you can use any white or cream fabric of your choice.  The first step is to make the coffee stain recipe listed above, you will want to wear a pair of rubber gloves before you start the next step or your hands will also end up being colored.  Start by pouring 2 ounces of the paint into a basin then add about a cup of the coffee stain mixture and stir until the paint has all mixed in with the coffee if you want the color to be darker add a small amount of coffee if you want it brighter add some more paint and stir.  Next add your fabric to the mixture, I do a yard at a time you can do less if you don’t need to color a yard, keep moving and rearranging the fabric until your fabric is completely covered with the paint mixture, next ring out your fabric and lay out in the sun to dry if there is not sun you can dry the fabric on a waxed or foiled lined cookie sheet in a 200 degree oven make sure you check and rearrange the fabric about every 5 minutes you don’t want it to burn.

Thank you for sharing your recipes for the coffee stain and paint. I love the colors that you achieve. Can the items that have been stained/painted be laundered later?
