DIY Fabric Lavender Flower

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Lavender Is one of my favorite wildflowers. I have been seeing everyone making lavender out of felt or paper. I love to sew so I think that is why I always go towards fabric. I have to say the lavender turned out so real looking. I used a dark purple cotton fabric and a lavender cotton fabric along with muslin I colored and coffee stained a green to make these beautiful lavender stems. If you would like to see how I color and coffee stain fabric I have a blog showing my process. I am not to much into making things out of paper or cardboard I am always worried they will get crushed when I store them away. Mother’s Day is right around the corner the lavender would make a beautiful Mother’s Day gift.

Supplies For One Lavender Stem:

  • 1 – 2”x2 ½” piece of green fabric
  • G1 – ½”x36” piece of green fabric
  • 1 – 2” wide x 15” long piece of purple or lavender cotton fabric
  • 1 – 18 gauge 18” green floral wire
  • Scissors
  • Small Snipping Shears
  • Ruler
  • Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
  • Tacky Craft Glue
  • Thread and Needle

Preparing the Fabric

Take your 2”x15” piece of purple or lavender cotton fabric lay flat then fold up the bottom about a ¼” away from the top. Rub the fold with your fingers to make a crease. Fold back the fabric add a line of tacky craft glue across the edge of the fabric you just folded back, fold the fabric back up and glue down about a ¼” away from the top. This ¼’ is where you are going to stop fringing the fabric. Now cut your 15” piece of fabric into four pieces a 4.5”, 4”, 3.5” and a 3”.

Using the ¼” edge as the stop guide, fringe the edge of the four strips.  Each fringe should be about 1/8th of an inch, they don’t have to be perfect but close in size.

To prepare the leaves take one of the 2” x 2 ½” green fabric pieces and fold in half long ways then in half again.  Cut between a ¼” and ½” leaf.  Start at the right bottom cutting a curve like a leaf coming to a point at the top then cut down the left side.  You will end up with four leaves.  Repeat this step to the other 2”x2 ½” piece of green fabric.  You will have a total of 8 leaves to add to your lavender stem.

Attaching the Fringed Fabric Pieces

Starting with the 4.5” piece of cotton fabric place a drop of hot glue on the tip of the floral wire, with the fringe facing upwards attach the fringed fabric at a slight slant.  Start rolling the fringed fabric down the wire at a slight slant. When you reach the end add a dab of hot glue and glue down.

Next add a small drop of hot glue at the bottom of the fringed fabric you just finished wrapping, glue down the end of the 2”x36” green strip of fabric.  Roll the fabric around the floral wire about a 1” down then clip and glue down the end.

Now add a drop of hot glue at the bottom of the green wrapped fabric and attach the 4” piece of fringed fabric.  Wrap at a slight slant down the floral wire. Glue down the end.  Add a dab of hot glue at the bottom of the wrapped fringe fabric attach the green fabric strip wrap down about an inch.  Cut and glue down the end.  Repeat these steps to the 3.5” and 3” pieces of fringed fabric with the green fabric in-between.

Adding the Leaves

Now that you have all the four fringed pieces of fabric attached it is time to attached the leaves.  Add a dab of hot glue at the bottom of the last fringed fabric you just attached glue down the end of the green fabric.  Wrap about a inch down add a dab of hot glue on the green fabric strip glue on one leaf wrap the fabric strip around to the other side add a dab of hot glue and add another leaf then wrap around.  I add hot glue to the floral wire and continue to wrap down about a 1” then add two more leaves just as you did the first two leaves.  I stagger the leaves so they are not all on the same side.  Repeat these steps to the other four leaves.  You can place the leaves as far apart as you would like you do not have to do a 1” between each set of leaves I will leave that up to you.  If the leaves are flopping down to much add a dap of hot glue on top of the leaf and glue up to the stem.

I hope you enjoy making these beautiful lavender stems and make enough of them to keep some for yourself and give some to mom as a Mother’s Day gift.  You should also check out the fabric roses we made here at The Crafty Decorator.

I always love your instruction, they are so helpful, in making any of your projects.
These are beautiful however, I live in California and have several bushes of fresh lavender, so I won’t try these. I still love the way they look, so real and don’t leave the mess fresh ones do.
