Dollar Tree Ceramic Starfish & Rope Tea Light Holder Transformation

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

I am working on setting a beach themed table setting and Dollar Tree has a lot of beach themed items this year and as soon as I seen the ceramic starfish and the ceramic rope tea light holder I knew they would be perfect for my table setting. I did not care for how white they were so below you will see how I transformed them to work better with my table setting.

Materials You Will Need:

  • Ceramic starfish from the Dollar Tree
  • Ceramic rope tea light candle holder from Dollar Tree
  • Cream Color Chalk Paint
  • Waverly Antiquing Wax
  • Rust-Oleum Clear Matt sealer
  • Paint brushes
  • Paper towels
  • Latex gloves

Painting Ceramic Starfish & Rope Tea Light Holder

The first step is to paint all sides of the starfish and tealight holder with a cream colored chalk paint, let dry. Paint a second coat on the pieces and let dry. Next outside or in a well ventilated area spray all sides of your starfish and tea light holder with a sealer, I like to use Rust-Oleum clear matt or matt dead flat sealer. Let your pieces dry.

Antiquing The Ceramic Pieces

Make sure you were your latex gloves for this part or your hands will get all brown lol.  I like to dampen my paintbrush for this part it is easier to apply the wax and remove if the paintbrush is damp.  Dip your damp paintbrush into the Waverly antiquing wax then apply the wax to part of the rope tea light next using a paper towel remove as much wax as you like until you achieve a look you are happy with, I like to leave more of the wax in between the ropes to give them depth.  Keep applying the wax and removing until you have the whole tea light holder done including the center and the bottom.

The starfish is going to be done the same way as the rope tea light holder. Dip your damp paintbrush into the Waverly antiquing wax then apply the wax to part of starfish next using a paper towel remove some of the wax you can remove as little or as much as you like until you achieve the look you are happy with.  Keep applying the wax and removing until you have done both sides of the starfish.  Once you have all your pieces antiqued and they are dry take them outside and spray them a second time with your sealer.

You are now finished with your transformation the only thing left to do is add a tea light into the holder and you are ready to add them to your beach or nautical décor.
