DIY Rusty Wire Hanging Taper Candle Holder

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

I have been seeing all different kinds of metal taper holders that you can hang from a cabinet so I thought I would try to make my own and I have to say for how simple this is to make it came out amazing! The best part about making your own rusty wire taper candle holder is you can make it as long as you like and you can make the hook as wide as you need. I have also made small holders for the 4” taper so I can hang them on my tree to give my tree the added look of simple times in years past.

Materials You Will Need:

  • 20 gauge rusty wire for taper holders for your tree
  • 18 gauge rusty wire for over the cabinet taper holders
  • 2.25” rusty star for each over the cabinet taper holder
  • 4” tapers for tree hangers
  • 7” tapers for over the cabinet holders
  • Wire cutters
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Hot glue gun

Making The Hanging Taper Candle Holder

The taper hanger for the 4” taper to hang on your tree and the taper holder for the 7” over the cabinet hanger are made the same way the only difference is the gauge of the wire. If you are making the hanging taper holders to hang on your tree you will want to use the 4” tapers and the 20 gauge wire, if you are making the taper hangers to hang over a cabinet door or an old shutter you will want to use the 7” tapers and the 18 gauge wire. I did not cut a piece of wire from the roll I worked with the whole roll of wire then cut after I was finishing making my holder.

Start by wrapping the rusty wire around your taper above the part that you open to insert the batteries, making sure you leave enough wire on the end to be able to twist around the wire that you are going to start wrapping. Take the end of the wire and twist around the wire that you are going to start wrapping up the taper, you may want to use a pair of needle nose pliers to tighten the wire so your taper will not fall through. Next start wrapping your wire around the taper stopping about a inch for the start of the bulb.

Next holding the wire where you stopped wrapping with your finger bring the wire straight up the taper and bulb, decide how long you want your taper to hang then bend the wire into a hook shape at the top.  Cut off excess wire.

Adding The Rusty Star

I added a 2.25” rusty star to my over the cabinet taper hanger but if you would like to add a star to the 4” taper holder for the tree you can you will just need a smaller rusty star.

Add hot glue to the back of the rusty star and glue to the rusty wire were you would like.  I placed by star towards the top of the hanger.

I hope you give these rusty wire hanging taper candle holders a try.  I just love that you can make them so they can hang any length you need and you can make the hook fit any item you would like to hang the taper from by just squeezing the hook closed.
