If you have been following me on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube you already know I just love vintage Christmas decor! I wanted to create a mitten ornament that would fit into my vintage Christmas decor and I am just loving how these mittens turned out. You can use this mitten pattern to create any style of mitten you like. Years ago, I made a primitive mitten using red ticking fabric with warm and natural as the trim. You can also make the mittens as bowl fillers instead of ornaments by omitting the hanger. Be creative in creating your mittens!
Supplies I Used
- Mitten Pattern
- Fabric of your choice. I used a red and blue-green upholstery velvet fabric I had in my stash. For each mitten I used two pieces of fabric each measuring approximately 7″ L x 5″ W.
- Sewing Machine and thread to match the fabric
- Straight pins
- 2.5″ Cream faux fur ribbon, I found mine in the Christmas section at Walmart. You can use any ribbon or fabric you would like as the trim.
- Sewing needle and thread to match trim
- Fabric Mod Podge
- Paint brush
- Images from scrapbook paper, fabric, wrapping paper or you can even use stickers
- Pencil or fabric marker
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Awl tool
- Pipe cleaners of your choice, 1 for each mitten you make
- Stickles glitter glue in our choice of colors
- Your choice of greenery and small items to fill your mittens
Making The Mitten
Print and cut out the mitten pattern. With the right sides of 2 fabric pieces facing inward trace the mitten onto the fabric then pin the fabric together using straight pins.

On a machine sew the mitten along the traced line, leaving the top of the mitten open. Cut out the mitten about 1/4″ from the seam. Then, using scissors clip around curved edges and between the finger and mitten as shown on the pattern, this will stop the fabric from puckering when you turn it right side out (RSO). Turn the mitten right side out.

Adding The Hanger &Trim
Use an awl tool to poke a hole on both sides of the mitten behind the seam and slightly down from the top. Feed one end of a pipe cleaner from the inside of the mitten through the hole. Bend the end of the pipe cleaner up and twist it around the pipe cleaner. Next feed the other end of the pipe cleaner through the other hole. Decide how long you want your hanger twist the end around and cut off the excess.

Cut a 6.5″ piece of ribbon, then cut that piece down the middle. You should now have two pieces of ribbon, each measuring 6.5″ x 1.25″. If you are using fabric for the trim cut the fabric 6.5″ long x 1.25″ wide.

Using a needle and thread hand stitch the trim around the top of the mitten. I also like to sew the sides of the trim together but this is optional.

Adding The Picture
Lightly stuff the mitten with polyester fiberfill, leaving about an inch of space at the top.

This part is optional; you could just leave the front plain and maybe add a cute vintage wooden ornament in the top with some greenery. Cut out the print you would like to add to the front making sure it doesn’t look too large. Apply fabric Mod Podge to the back then attach it to the front of the mitten. If you are using a sticker peel off backing, apply the Mod Podge, then attach it. I found that I had to remove the sticker apply a second coat of Mod Podge, and then attach it again. Set aside to dry.

Once your photo is dry and you see some of the ends lifting, cover the photo with parchment paper and iron it. This will activate the mod podge and attach the ends.

Filling & Adding Glitter
Add your greenery, berries, bottlebrush tree, or whatever you have chosen to fill your mittens with. I added some greenery and berries and made a few pipe cleaner candy canes for my mittens with the elves on the front.

Finally add Stickles glitter glue around the photo then set aside to dry. If you don’t have any stickles glitter glue you can use Elmer’s glue around the photo and then sprinkle it with glitter.

I hope you get creative and make these mittens your own. They would be so cute also if you wrote your family members’ names on them and filled them with candy for them to take off the tree!
